Passive Fire Protection for Retail units.
Retail units, and the infrastructure that supports them, are integral to the UK economy. In the retail sector, the impact of fire is significant as these are often high footfall locations, visited by the general public as well as the staff that keep them operational. But a fire in retail can also put entire businesses at risk through loss of stock and assets. From the smallest local convenience store to the largest of regional distribution centres, appropriate, effective and compliant passive fire protection can allow for longer evacuation times, increased access periods for the attending emergency services and greater protection of the integrity of the structure – protecting lives and assets, as well as decreasing the cost and time of rebuild in the aftermath.
Our safety-critical solutions have been installed by our skilled teams of passive fire protection installers in retail facilities across the UK, in supermarkets, car dealerships and shopping centres that welcome the public through their doors, as well as the vast distribution centres that maintain and supply our shops and online retail businesses.
New build facilities across the UK
Working closely with main contractors, our experienced site teams both apply intumescent paints and install firestopping in accordance with the site-specific fire strategy, marking up drawings as they pass through the building to provide site management with a detailed package of quality assurance evidence of locations in the envelope or compartment wall that have been protected.
Through this process, our teams have successfully delivered compliant and tested passive fire protection to a range of locations, including Jaguar Land Rover in Wolverhampton with Stepnell, Selly Oak Shopping Park for FGS and a package in excess of £100,000 at a substantial new supermarket regional distribution centre in the Midlands, as well as a comprehensive intumescent paint and firestopping package to the vast new 4-storey Amazon distribution centre in Swindon with Buckingham Group.
Fire surveys, maintenance and remedial works
Works in live retail environments can present additional challenges in safeguarding the public and maintaining a degree of business as usual. But any refurbishment works, current or historic, that affect the fire compartmentation line can create dangerous, unnecessary and often unrecognised risks to the lives of customers, employees, property and stock, as well as the building structure.
Our experienced contracts management team work closely with the site team throughout the process – whether a main contractor leading the refurbishment or a building or facilities manager responsible for the site – to ensure complete rectification of compartmentation vulnerabilities. One of our Contracts Managers will attend site for a full pre-commencement assessment, to understand both the passive fire protection requirements and the needs of the business or businesses that might be affected. Careful scheduling is agreed, particularly in high footfall or noise-sensitive sites and out of hours working can be arranged. Full briefing of our installation teams follows, with all site-specific requirements detailed in the risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) and regular site contact is maintained throughout to ensure a successful delivery programme is met, while our quality assurance process provides demonstrable and recorded evidence of compliance to give peace of mind.
Our Contracts Managers are all certified fire inspectors and fire surveys can be arranged to guide the building manager or facilities manager through a review of existing passive fire protection if this has not been completed already. Our experienced site teams have delivered successful refurbishment and remedial packages to a varied mix of sites across the UK including IKEA in Nottingham and a substantial regional distribution centre near Coventry.
